The United Nations established a World Solidarity Fund in 2003 with the aim of eradicating poverty and promoting human and social development in backward and developing countries. The World Solidarity Fund was established by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) as a trust fund.

Later, in the light of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), on 22 December 2005, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution (A/RES/60/209) declaring 20 December as International Human Solidarity Day. The resolution recalls the United Nations Millennium Declaration which included “solidarity” as one of the fundamental and universal values.
